Major Storm Impacts California’s Central Coast

Event Date: December 24, 2024
Location: Watsonville, CA
Category: Severe Weather
Severity: High

A significant system has wreaked havoc on California's central coast today, leading to severe flooding and perilous surf conditions. Tragically, the storm has been attributed to the death of a man who was fatally trapped beneath debris on a beach, and it resulted in the partial collapse of a pier in Santa Cruz, throwing three individuals into the turbulent waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Storm Overview

The storm, characterized by hurricane-force winds and extraordinary heights estimated at up to 60 feet, has created dangerous conditions that prompted local officials to issue evacuation orders for beachfront properties. The city of Santa Cruz has faced particularly critical impacts, including the collapse of a section of the municipal wharf currently under renovation.

Mayor Fred Keeley warned the community, stating, “We are anticipating that what is coming toward us is more serious than what was there this morning.” Evacuations were advised for residents in low-lying areas as the storm's intensity is expected to increase.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

At Sunset State Beach in Watsonville, first responders were summoned around 11:30 AM after reports emerged of a man trapped under debris. It is believed he was pinned by a large wave, and despite efforts, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office has not yet released his identity.

Additionally, another man was swept into the ocean at Marina State Beach, approximately 13 miles south of Watsonville. Strong currents and deteriorating conditions forced search efforts to be suspended after approximately two hours.

In Santa Cruz, the partially collapsed municipal wharf resulted in three people falling into the water, though two were rescued by lifeguards, while one managed to swim to safety. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but the damage inflicted on the structure has raised concerns.

David Johnston, a local business owner, remarked, “It's a catastrophe for those down at the end of the wharf.” Approximately 150 feet of the end of the wharf collapsed, with parts floating down the coastline and posing hazards to boats due to submerged pilings.

Ongoing Weather Forecast

As the storm continues its trajectory from California towards the Pacific Northwest, warnings extend beyond state borders. Forecasts indicate dangerous surf conditions and sustained winds potentially reaching up to 80 mph along coastal areas from central Oregon to southwestern Washington. The National Weather Service has issued high surf warnings, forecasting this period as likely to record some of the highest surf witnessed this winter.

Residents along the affected coastlines are urged to stay informed, adhere to evacuation orders, and avoid entering the water. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
