Solar flare magnetic storm
January 21, 2025: A solar flare of M3.3 occurred at 10:39 UTC. The flare was long-lasting (started at 10:08 UTC and ended at 11:00 UTC) and was accompanied by a coronal mass ejection (CME) directed toward Earth.
CME velocity: The CME is estimated to have a velocity of 565 km/s.
CME arrival time at Earth: The CME is expected to reach Earth between late January 24 and January 25.
Geomagnetic activity forecast: A level of restless to active geomagnetic conditions is forecast, with a G1 (small storm) geomagnetic storm likely to occur in mid-to-late January 24 and through January 25.
What does G1 mean?
Geomagnetic storms are classified on a G scale from G1 (weakest) to G5 (strongest). G1 is a minor storm that can cause:
Minor fluctuations in power grids.
Minor impacts on satellite operations.
Aurora borealis, which may be visible at lower latitudes than usual.
