West Sumatra is reeling from the aftermath of destructive floods and landslides, unleashed by relentless torrential rains since Thursday, 7, 2024.

 

The calamitous event unfolded with a massive on Friday, March 8, unleashing tons of mud and debris into a river, triggering catastrophic floods across several mountainside villages in the Pesisir Selatan district. Rescue operations, although heroic, have faced grim challenges, recovering seven bodies from the hardest-hit village of Koto XI Tarusan by Saturday. The death toll climbed to 21 by Sunday, with six more bodies discovered in Pesisir Selatan and three in the neighboring Padang Pariaman district.

 

The devastation extends beyond the loss of lives, with over 37,000 homes affected, 666 damaged, and crucial infrastructure, including bridges and irrigation units, severely impacted. Transportation and agriculture have been severely disrupted, compounding the crisis, with power outages and debris obstructing rescue efforts. Urgent needs for residents include food, clean water, and shelter, as they grapple with the aftermath of this catastrophic event.
