A tropical depression is a type of tropical cyclone with a closed low-pressure center, organized thunderstorm activity, and maximum sustained winds of less than 39 mph (63 km/h). It is the first official stage of tropical cyclone development, preceding a tropical storm. While generally weaker than tropical storms or hurricanes, tropical depressions can still produce heavy rainfall, flooding, and gusty winds, especially in coastal or low-lying areas.
