Typhoon Ampil Skirts Japan, Bringing Brief Chaos
Tokyo, Japan – August 17, 2024 – Japan breathed a sigh of relief as Typhoon Ampil moved eastward out into the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, sparing the country from the worst of its wrath. While the storm brought heavy rains and strong winds to parts of the country, particularly the eastern and northern regions, the damage was less severe than initially feared.
The powerful typhoon caused significant disruptions, including widespread power outages, transportation delays, and the evacuation of over 320,000 residents in Fukushima Prefecture. However, as Ampil moved away, life gradually returned to normal.
Tokyo and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rainfall but avoided the most destructive impacts of the storm. Bullet train services, which had been suspended, resumed operations, and airports began to recover from flight cancellations and delays.
While the immediate threat of the typhoon has passed, authorities are warning of potential landslides and flash floods in areas that received heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to remain cautious and follow local weather advisories.
Additionally, a heatwave is expected to follow the storm, with temperatures soaring to potentially dangerous levels. The public is urged to stay hydrated and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
