"We are experiencing a major power outage across the network due to a tornado which has damaged property and power lines in the Mangawhai area. We are assessing the situation and will provide updates as soon as we can. Please consider all lines and equipment energised."

The New Zealand Fire Service confirmed that 16 calls had been received by 5.30am. Several crews were dispatched to the scene.

They found homes with roofs torn off, trees fallen and power lines down.

Residents reported that several homes were damaged on one street. The exact extent of the damage is not yet known.

Rescue coordinator Graham Quensell urged people to remain cautious:
