El Niño

El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by the periodic warming of the sea surface temperature in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. It is one phase of a larger climate pattern known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which also includes its opposite phase, La Niña. El Niño events occur irregularly, typically every two to seven years, and can last for several months.
