NASA stands for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an independent agency of the U.S. federal government responsible for the civil space program, aeronautics research, and space science. It was established in 1958 in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite.
