Europe Hit by First Arctic Cold Blast of the Season - Get Ready for Extreme Cold!

First Arctic Cold Blast Hits Europe

After weeks of unseasonably warm , is bracing for a major shift in its pattern as a deep low-pressure system forms in the north. This is expected to usher in the first Arctic cold blast of the season into western and central parts of the continent over the weekend and into early next week.

Europe has experienced an unprecedented heatwave, with record-breaking warmth extending from well into mid-October. But now, a dramatic reversal of conditions is looming as a cold front sweeps across the continent, delivering the first frosts of the season to low-lying areas in western and central Europe.

In addition to the drop in temperatures, the frontal system is set to bring fresh snowfall to parts of Scandinavia, the northern UK, and possibly northern Denmark.

The sharp change in temperatures will be noticeable as the Arctic front passes. In some areas, temperatures are expected to plummet by about 10°C in just two days, making it around 16-18°C colder than the unusually warm conditions experienced in recent weeks.

The change is attributed to a significant shift in the pattern. A blocking high-pressure system that dominated Europe in the first half of October is giving way to a powerful intrusion of Arctic cold air mass from the north. As the high-pressure system collapses, a deep low-pressure system is expected to develop over the weekend and bring the cold air with it.

This change will be especially striking as temperatures have been much warmer than normal over the past few weeks. The cold front is forecast to move across and the UK on Friday, enter continental Europe on Saturday, and extend from the Baltic region to central . The cold air will continue its southeastward progression into Sunday, reaching the Balkan Peninsula by Sunday night.

In the days leading up to the arrival of the Arctic cold air, and the Balkans are expected to experience unusually warm conditions, making the shift in weather all the more pronounced when it arrives.

This change is also expected to bring heavy snowfall to Scandinavia, with accumulations of up to 50 cm in some areas, particularly in southwestern . In the northern UK, Northern , and parts of Scotland, wintry showers and snowfall are anticipated over the weekend.

With the arrival of the cold front, daytime temperatures will be markedly colder, with overnight frost expected in various areas. This shift in weather serves as a reminder that as the seasons change, Europe must be prepared for the challenges posed by colder weather.
