Tornado Outbreak Hits Midwest: Iowa and Nebraska Bear the Brunt

Hey guys, storm chasers and weather enthusiasts! We're here to break down the intense tornado outbreak that pummeled the Midwest on April 16th, 2024.

Mother Nature unleashed her fury, spawning at least 17 tornadoes across parts of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Nebraska. Iowa and Nebraska took the biggest hit, with a reported 10 twisters touching down in Iowa alone!

EF2 Tornado Tears Through Kansas:

One particularly nasty storm, an EF2 tornado near Virgil, Kansas, packed winds exceeding 118 mph and carved a path over 2.7 miles long. This powerful twister left a trail of destruction, damaging even steel structures.

Iowa Battered by Multiple Tornadoes:

Across Iowa, numerous locations reported tornado activity. Outbuildings were demolished, debris like sheet metal was scattered across fields, and structural damage was reported in Henry County. In Pocahontas County, folks even spotted rope tornadoes!

Nebraska Deals with Touchdowns and Re-formations:

Nebraska also got its share of the action, with multiple tornadoes touching down and re-forming in Platte and Colfax Counties. One particularly notable event occurred southwest of Platte Center, where property damage, including a detached garage, was reported.

Thankfully, no fatalities were reported, but at least 2 people in Kansas suffered injuries. These twisters left a path of destruction across several communities, and over 20,000 people were left in the dark with power outages impacting Missouri the most.
