The calamitous event unfolded with a massive landslide on Friday, March 8, unleashing tons of mud and debris into a river, triggering catastrophic floods across several mountainside villages in the Pesisir Selatan district. Rescue operations, although heroic, have faced grim challenges, recovering seven bodies from the hardest-hit village of Koto XI Tarusan by Saturday. The death toll climbed to 21 by Sunday, with six more bodies discovered in Pesisir Selatan and three in the neighboring Padang Pariaman district.
