worst of the rain has moved away, but communities across <strong>Connecticut, southeastern New York and northern New Jersey<\/strong> are cleaning up after one of the most intense rain events of September.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, September 13, thunderstorms repeatedly crossed the <a href=\"https:\/\/pogodnik.com\/en\/10594-weather-in-new-york-city-united-states\/month\">New York City<\/a> tri-state region, producing rainfall intense enough to turn streets into streams, trap drivers inside vehicles and disrupt one of the busiest transportation corridors in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The National Weather Service issued multiple <strong>Flash Flood Warnings<\/strong>, including warnings for southern Fairfield County in Connecticut and parts of northern New Jersey. At times, the NWS estimated rainfall rates of <strong>1\u20132 inches per hour<\/strong>, warning of flooding on roads, underpasses, small streams and poorly drained urban areas. (<a title=\"Flash flooding hits Connecticut, New York and New Jersey | AP News\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/0eb9d3e5b487825ff0873f0b72465e40\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AP News<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The combination of highway flooding, rail disruption and airport impacts is one reason this event became much more than a localized thunderstorm story.<\/p>\n<p>It affected multiple parts of the region&#8217;s transportation network at the same time.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Why Did So Much Rain Fall So Quickly?<\/h2>\n<p>The meteorological setup was unusually efficient at producing heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the flooding, the National Weather Service described a <strong>warm front moving north through the Mid-Atlantic while an upper-level disturbance crossed the region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Those systems tapped into a very moist, almost tropical air mass.<\/p>\n<p>Atmospheric moisture values \u2014 known as precipitable water \u2014 climbed to roughly <strong>2 to 2.25 inches<\/strong>, especially near the coast. That meant thunderstorms had an unusually deep supply of moisture available to convert into torrential rainfall. (<a title=\"National Weather Service\" href=\"https:\/\/preview-forecast.weather.gov\/product.php?format=CI&amp;glossary=0&amp;issuedby=OKX&amp;product=AFD&amp;site=NWS&amp;version=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Weather Service<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2>Monday, September 14 \u2014 Drying Out, Breezy and Cooler<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Main story: cleanup weather replaces flash flooding.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of Connecticut, New York City and northern New Jersey should turn much drier.<\/p>\n<p>A few early showers associated with the cold front cannot be ruled out, but sunshine should increase and humidity will fall sharply.<\/p>\n<p>NWS forecasts generally place afternoon highs in the <strong>lower to mid-70s Fahrenheit<\/strong>, around <strong>21\u201324\u00b0C<\/strong>, with somewhat cooler readings along parts of the Connecticut coast.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the front, northwest wind gusts could reach around <strong>20\u201325 mph<\/strong>, or <strong>9\u201311 m\/s<\/strong>.
