ESTOFEX has issued Level 2 for parts of east-central and northeastern Germany extending into western Poland, where organized thunderstorms may produce damaging gusts and, in a narrow corridor, an isolated tornado.

This is not a forecast that “tornadoes will hit Germany and Poland.”

The tornado threat is conditional and localized.

The much broader concern is a rapidly moving band of showers and thunderstorms interacting with an exceptionally strong wind field. Where thunderstorms become organized, they may transfer that stronger wind toward the surface very efficiently.

ESTOFEX specifically highlights the possibility of a broken convective line or LEWP — a wave-shaped section of a squall line — moving southeast across northeastern Germany. Breaks and bends in that line are the places where short-lived rotation and an isolated tornado become more plausible.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full has a different ingredient:

extreme wind shear.

ESTOFEX forecast soundings show approximately:

22 m/s low-level shear;

30 m/s shear through the lowest 3 km;

storm-relative helicity around 350–400 m²/² in the most favorable corridor.

Those are very strong kinematic values.

In simple terms, the wind is changing speed and direction extremely quickly with height.

The atmosphere may have only modest instability, but any thunderstorm that successfully develops can become organized very quickly.

The storm ingredients

Moisture: enough low-level moisture for thunderstorms.

Instability: limited or “skinny,” but potentially sufficient.

Wind shear: exceptionally strong.

Low-level rotation: locally very favorable.

Fast storm motion: raises the damaging-wind threat.

This is why the main story is not giant hail.

It is:

fast-moving thunderstorms capable of suddenly producing damaging straight-line wind, with a small but real tornado window in the most favorable line breaks.

Germany: official DWD warnings are already strong

Germany’s national weather service DWD independently confirms a significant wind and thunderstorm threat.

For northern and central Germany on September 4, DWD expects widespread southwest-to-west winds with gusts of approximately:

55–70 km/h.

Isolated storm-force gusts near:

85 km/h

are possible.

In higher terrain, gusts can reach roughly 100 km/h, with the most exposed peaks locally near 110 km/h.

During stronger thunderstorms, DWD says localized wind gusts around 85 km/h are possible, with isolated severe gusts near 100 km/h not ruled out.

Thunderstorms may also produce:

around 20 mm of rain in one hour;

small hail;

abrupt wind shifts.

Heavy rain in northern Germany

Another major threat sits slightly north of the core tornado corridor.

DWD expects a narrow band from East Frisia toward Mecklenburg to receive roughly:

20–35 mm of rain in about six hours.

Locally, totals could reach around:

50 mm.

DWD classifies those localized totals as potentially severe.

This matches the Weather Forecaster signal especially well near Rostock.

Poland: wind and thunderstorms move east

The system then shifts toward western Poland.

IMGW’s official weekly outlook describes Friday as unsettled and windy, with showers and thunderstorms. Across Poland, background winds may reach roughly 30–40 km/h, with gusts near 65 km/h, and more than 70 km/h near parts of the coast.

The severe convective tornado signal itself comes from ESTOFEX, not from an IMGW tornado warning.

That distinction is important.

ESTOFEX is highlighting an atmospheric environment favorable for an isolated tornado if the correct storm structure develops.

IMGW remains the official source for real-time warnings in Poland.

Weather Forecaster 5-day forecast for the severe-weather corridor

The following forecast uses the Weather Forecaster forecast model, checked September 4, 2026.

One critical warning before reading the tables:

Weather Forecaster city forecast wind gusts are not the maximum gust that can occur inside a thunderstorm.

A convective downburst or rotating line segment can produce gusts far above the daily grid value.

That is why the DWD/ESTOFEX severe-weather guidance matters more than a city forecast during the actual storm passage.

Berlin: Level 2 corridor

DateHigh / LowRainPeak model 5

How serious is the tornado risk?

The right wording is:

isolated tornado possible.

Not:

“a tornado will hit Germany.”

ESTOFEX describes an environment with exceptional low-level shear.

Forecast profiles show low-level shear near 22 m/s and storm-relative helicity around 350–400 m²/s².

Those values are easily sufficient for rotation.

The main limiting factor is instability.

If thunderstorms remain shallow or weak, much of that rotation may never be converted into a tornado-producing storm.

But if even a narrow line break becomes surface-based and rotates, the environment would support a brief tornado.

ESTOFEX also says that if instability turns out slightly stronger than currently forecast, an isolated stronger tornado could not be ignored.

This is why nowcasting is essential.

The exact wave position and storm structure will determine whether the day produces mostly wind, or one or two localized rotating storms.

Why damaging wind is more likely than a tornado

The wind field several thousand feet above the ground is exceptionally strong.

ESTOFEX mentions winds near 60 knots at 850 hPa — roughly 110 km/h at around 1–1.5 km altitude.

A thunderstorm downdraft does not need to create new wind from scratch.

It can simply transport some of that existing momentum downward.

That is how a storm line can suddenly produce a corridor of damaging gusts.

The highest risk is with:

fast-moving line segments;

bowing sections;

breaks in the line;

embedded rotating cells.

Hail risk

Hail is possible, but it is not the primary Level 2 hazard.

DWD mentions small hail with some strong storms.

ESTOFEX’s September 4 Level 2 is focused much more strongly on:

severe gusts + isolated tornado.

That is important because it separates this event from some of the very large-hail outbreaks Europe experienced earlier in the summer.

What happens after September 4?

The severe convective window is relatively short.

September 5

Much cooler air spreads east.

Germany and western Poland remain windy, but instability decreases substantially.

Scattered showers and some thunderstorms remain possible, especially near northern Germany and the Baltic region.

September 6

Most inland areas turn significantly calmer and drier.

Temperatures are generally around 18–21°C.

The main front is already farther east.

September 7

High pressure briefly takes over.

The interesting detail is the temperature rebound in Germany:

Magdeburg and Leipzig could jump back toward 28°C.

September 8

Another zone of cloud and rain may begin returning into parts of central Europe.

Weather Forecaster currently increases precipitation again around Leipzig and Zielona Góra.

That will need another forecast update.

Official warning vs model signal

ESTOFEX — CONVECTIVE OUTLOOK

Level 2: east-central / northeastern Germany into western Poland.

Main hazards:

severe wind gusts;

isolated tornado;

locally heavy rain.

The tornado risk is also present outside Level 2 at lower confidence.

DWD — OFFICIAL GERMAN WARNING CONTEXT

DWD expects:

widespread 55–70 km/h gusts in northern/central Germany;

isolated 85 km/h storm gusts;

locally 100 km/h gusts in stronger thunderstorms;

small hail;

around 20 mm/hour rainfall in storms;

20–35 mm, locally near 50 mm over the northern heavy-rain corridor.

IMGW — OFFICIAL POLISH FORECAST

IMGW expects Friday to remain dynamic and windy, with:

showers;

local thunderstorms;

gusts around 65 km/h;

more than 70 km/h near parts of the Baltic coast;

locally heavier rain in northern Poland.

The tornado risk is an ESTOFEX convective assessment, not an IMGW tornado warning.

Why Weather Forecaster shows weaker wind than the severe forecast

This is very important.

For example:

Berlin Weather Forecaster: ~64 km/h.

Leipzig: ~68 km/h.

Poznań: ~60 km/h.

Yet DWD says an individual strong thunderstorm may produce 85–100 km/h gusts.

There is no contradiction.

Weather Forecaster city forecast represents a grid-cell weather field.

A downburst may affect only a few kilometers.

A rotating line break can produce an even narrower corridor of damaging wind.

So during severe convection:

the city-grid wind forecast can significantly underestimate the strongest local impact.

Main Weather Forecaster conclusion

September 4 is currently the most important severe-weather day in Europe, with the primary operational threat extending from Germany into western Poland.

This is not a widespread tornado outbreak forecast.

But the environment is unusually favorable for rapidly organized convection.

The strongest signal is for damaging wind.

ESTOFEX Level 2 covers east-central and northeastern Germany into western Poland, and DWD independently expects widespread strong wind with thunderstorms capable of localized gusts around 85–100 km/h.

The tornado potential is much narrower.

It depends on a thunderstorm successfully forming inside an environment with:

very strong low-level shear;

strong rotation;

low cloud bases;

enough instability to keep the storm surface-based.

If that happens, a short-lived isolated tornado is possible — especially near a break or bend in the fast-moving storm line.

The system will then move rapidly toward Poland.

For western Poland, the biggest threats are strong gusts, thunderstorms and locally heavy rain.

By the weekend, the atmosphere settles considerably.

Before traveling

Before driving across northern or eastern Germany and western Poland on September 4, check:

official DWD or IMGW alerts;

thunderstorm radar;

lightning activity;

wind gusts;

the hourly forecast.

Use the Weather Forecaster to follow rain and wind on the map before your trip.
