El Niño Split-Flow Strengthens

The first full Winter 2026–2027 model package is sharpening a major north–south weather divide across North America. A powerful Super El Niño is strengthening the Pacific jet and building a split-flow pattern, with Canada and the far northern United States leaning warmer while parts of the central, southern and eastern U.S. trend cooler and wetter. The latest February guidance is especially notable: two separate forecast systems now show below-normal temperatures across a broad part of the central, southern and eastern United States.

What is new in the August 26 winter forecast

ECMWF shows a stronger split-flow setup, with a blocking ridge over Canada and a powerful storm track across the southern United States.

Texas, the Gulf Coast, Southeast and parts of the East lean cooler than normal in the seasonal temperature pattern.

NMME supports the same broad temperature divide, increasing confidence in a cooler southern/central U.S. signal.

February 2027 now has a clearer cold signal: both NMME and CFSv2 show below-normal temperatures across parts of the central, southern and eastern U.S.

The Polar Vortex is another wildcard: ECMWF and UKMO both show weaker stratospheric westerly winds around late December and January, but no specific SSW event can be predicted this far ahead.

A stronger Super El Niño is building the winter split-flow

The latest ECMWF pressure forecast shows a deep North Pacific low and a strong high-pressure ridge over Canada. That ridge forces the jet stream to split: the northern branch is displaced around the Canadian high, while a stronger subtropical jet runs across the southern United States.

This is one of the clearest classic El Niño winter signatures. The northern tier sits closer to the warm ridge, while the southern branch becomes the main highway for Pacific moisture, cloud cover and storm systems.

The pattern becomes more amplified from December into January rather than shifting to an entirely different setup. That matters because stronger pressure anomalies increase the contrast between warm Canada and the northern U.S. and the active storm corridor farther south.

Where the winter forecast turns cooler

The ECMWF seasonal temperature map places the strongest warm signal over Canada, the northern United States, the West Coast and parts of the Northeast. But underneath the active southern storm track, cooler-than-normal seasonal temperatures appear across Texas, the Gulf Coast, the Southeast and parts of the East.

This does not necessarily mean persistent Arctic cold. A large part of the cooler anomaly can be produced by frequent low pressure, clouds, rain and suppressed daytime temperatures. The truly high-impact cold risk develops when Arctic air drops south and overlaps the moisture-rich southern storm track.

Key U.S. locations to watch.

The current large-scale pattern makes Dallas a useful marker for the southern Plains, Atlanta for the Southeast, Denver for the central Rockies/High Plains, and New York for the eastern storm track. Seasonal signals do not predict a specific storm in these cities, but they identify the regions where the rain–snow–ice boundary may become important.

February 2027 has the strongest new cold signal

The biggest change from earlier outlooks appears later in winter. In the February trend, the Canadian ridge remains strong while the southern low-pressure zone becomes more amplified.

Two separate systems — NMME and CFSv2 — now show a broad area of below-normal temperatures across parts of the central, southern and eastern United States in February. Agreement between independent forecast systems does not guarantee a cold month, but it makes the signal more important than a single-model anomaly.

The setup would favor a stronger temperature gradient between warm Canada/far northern U.S. and a cooler, stormier southern half of the country.

The southern storm track also gets wetter

ECMWF and NMME both support above-normal precipitation across large parts of the West Coast, southern tier, Southeast and eastern United States. The amplified Pacific jet acts as a conveyor belt for moisture and low-pressure systems.

For California and the Southwest, this raises the potential for atmospheric-river episodes and mountain snow. Across Texas, the lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast, it favors more frequent rain and storm systems.

When cold air is absent, these systems are mainly rain producers. When Canadian or Arctic air is already in place, the same moisture corridor can generate freezing rain, sleet or disruptive snow.

Snowfall potential shifts south and east

The new ECMWF snowfall forecast reflects the same split-flow pattern. Snowfall is reduced across much of the northern United States and southern/Atlantic Canada, while above-normal snowfall potential appears across parts of the Southwest, Central Plains, Midwest, East and Mid-Atlantic.

For mountain snow, California’s Sierra Nevada, Utah and the central to southern Rockies currently have the strongest seasonal upside. By contrast, the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies and parts of northern New England face a tougher setup because the warm northern ridge can reduce sustained cold and divert storm tracks.

Could the Polar Vortex make the U.S. even colder?

There is now an additional mid-winter signal to monitor. ECMWF shows weaker-than-normal stratospheric westerly winds around late December and January, and the UKMO seasonal forecast shows an even stronger weakening over roughly the same period.

This is not a forecast of a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event. Seasonal models cannot reliably predict a specific major SSW months in advance. But the agreement suggests a background state that may be more favorable for Polar Vortex disruption.

If a weakened vortex later couples down into the lower atmosphere, it can increase the chance of Arctic air reaching the central or eastern United States.
