In the rugged mountains of Aomori Prefecture, Sukayu Onsen has found itself at the mercy of an extraordinary snow onslaught. On Thursday, February 20, 2025, this remote Japanese hotspot recorded a jaw-dropping snow depth of 5.15 meters (16.9 feet)\u2014the deepest pile-up in 12 years. Just a day later, on Friday, February 21, the snowpack tipped past 5 meters (16.4 feet) once more at around 15:00 local time (LT), cementing this as only the second time since 1979 that Sukayu has seen such towering snow levels.<\/p>\n

This wintry spectacle comes courtesy of a ferocious cold wave sweeping across the Sea of Japan coast, delivering relentless snow to an already blanketed Sukayu. Friday saw a tug-of-war between melting and fresh flakes, with snow depths dipping to 4.92 meters (16.1 feet) at 10:00 LT before climbing again as the skies unleashed more powder. For context, the last time Sukayu saw anything close to this was back on February 26, 2013, when snow depths hit a whopping 5.66 meters (18.6 feet)\u2014a high-water mark that this week\u2019s totals are nipping at.<\/p>\n
