Palma, Mallorca \u2013 August 15, 2024 \u2013 The Balearic Islands are grappling with the aftermath of a severe storm system that has wreaked havoc across the region. The second day of the low-pressure system, known as Danna, has brought torrential rain, flooding, and widespread disruption, particularly to Mallorca.<\/p>\n
Emergency services have been overwhelmed by calls for assistance as rivers burst their banks, roads were submerged, and properties flooded. The town of Manacor was particularly hard hit, with the local auditorium inundated and a car swept away by floodwaters. Other areas, including Porto Soler, also experienced severe flooding.<\/p>\n
The storm has caused significant disruption to transportation, with train services suspended due to flooded tracks and numerous road closures reported. The Axenstrasse, a major road on the mainland, was also affected by landslides.<\/p>\n
Meteorological authorities have issued red alerts for parts of the island, warning of up to 180 liters of rain per square meter in just a few hours. The intense rainfall has led to flash flooding and dangerous conditions.<\/p>\n
Air travel has been severely impacted, with Palma Airport experiencing numerous cancellations and delays. Passengers are advised to check flight statuses before heading to the airport.<\/p>\n
