Weather Europe:

In Berlin, temperatures have recently plummeted to lows of -11°C. However, forecasts indicate a warming trend by the end of the week, bringing relief from the current .

Weather United States:

A powerful Arctic air mass is plunging deep into the central United States, triggering extreme cold warnings from Minnesota to Texas. This dangerous outbreak is set to bring record-breaking low temperatures, life-threatening wind chills, and significant snowfall from Tuesday to Friday, February 18–21, 2025.

Extreme Cold and Wind Chill Hazards

As the Arctic front advances southward from , frigid air will envelop the northern and central Plains, extending its grip as far as the Gulf Coast. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that wind chills could plummet to an astonishing -34 to -51 °C (-30 to -60 °F) in the northern Plains, with sub-zero wind chills stretching into Texas, Arkansas, western Tennessee, and Kentucky. Frostbite can occur in just minutes under these extreme conditions, posing serious risks to exposed skin.

Snowfall and Travel Disruptions

Along with the bitter cold, a swath of moderate to heavy snowfall will accompany the Arctic surge. Central and eastern Kansas, as well as parts of southern Missouri, are forecast to receive up to 20 cm (8 inches) of snow, with snowfall rates reaching 2.5 cm (1 inch) per hour. This accumulation will likely cause hazardous travel conditions, road closures, and potential power outages due to the weight of the snow on power lines and trees.

Record-Breaking Temperature Forecast

Temperatures are expected to reach historic lows, with many regions setting new daily records. Cities in the central U.S. may experience temperatures that are 15–25°C (25–45°F) below average. Even locations in the Deep South, including parts of Louisiana and Mississippi, could see rare freezing temperatures, further emphasizing the extent of this Arctic outbreak.

The brutal cold is expected to persist through the end of the week before a gradual moderation begins over the weekend. However, lingering sub-freezing temperatures and continued strong winds may extend dangerous wind chill conditions, delaying any significant relief.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions: dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and prepare for potential power outages. Travelers should check local advisories before heading out, as road conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly.
